As it has in the last few years, Samsung has once again knocked it out of the park with its latest model in the Ultra lineup the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Even though Samsung didn’t make any major design changes to the new variant, aside from making the display flat and going with a titanium frame, the updates it did get are pretty great.
Aside from flattening the display, the variable refresh rate from 1-120Hz continues to help with extending the battery life, which in our review was around two days per charge, it also got a bump in its PWM frequency to cause less strain on your eyes. Another contributor to the long battery life is the more efficient yet highly powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy processor.
While the 5000mAh battery isn’t small, it also isn’t the largest around. But thanks to Samsung’s tuning and the SoC’s efficiency, the device lasts plenty long between charges. The downside is that Samsung stuck with a lower-than-preferred 45W wired charging speed and 15W for wireless. So, just remember to leave yourself a little extra time to top up your Galaxy S24 Ultra.

If you’ve been in the market for a budget phone, there’s no doubt that you’ve come across some Motorola designs. One of our favorite Motos is the Moto G Stylus 5G (2023) thanks to its upgraded specs, nice build quality, good primary camera, and stylus. One other thing Moto gets right is the battery size with a chunky 5000mAh power pack easily taking this phone to the end of the day. Our Moto G Stylus 5G (2023) review noted about a day to a day and a half on battery.
Motorola has also given this phone some solid specs with a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 SoC that’s not topping any benchmark leaderboards but can power through apps with no major issues on this phone. You can even play some 3D games if you don’t mind knocking a few settings back to medium. For its price, the main 50MP camera is also good with plenty of detail and dynamic range in daylight.
Motorola has given this phone a large 6.6-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate that’s easy to use with the stylus. The phone launched with Android 13 and is planned to get an Android 14 update. This phone also supports 5G on the major carriers, including C-band support.

OnePlus has never been shy about finding ways to push the limits of the performance-to-dollar ratio, and the new OnePlus 12 perfectly embodies this. During our review, it was clear that the company has once again given us a blazing-fast device both in the performance category and charging speeds.
Though it is great that you can charge this phone from zero to 100% in a little over 30 minutes with the included charger and a bit over an hour using the 50W AirVOOC charger, you won’t have to use either often thanks to the nearly two-day battery life. The display in the OnePlus 12 helps to extend the battery a bit with its 1-120Hz variable refresh rate.
At under $1000, it’s great to see a phone that offers flagship cameras, performance, and battery life. But it is a bit of a downer to see it lacking an official water resistance rating, along with not being able to walk into your carrier store to buy one. However, if you’re willing to buy the phone without the carrier lockdown, there are some great deals on the OnePlus 12.
Best for Google AI
The new Google Pixel 8 Pro continues the brand’s legacy of ridiculously impressive camera chops. As always Google’s computational photography powers the processing of images captured with the camera system. But this year, it also gets some exclusive AI editing features that we really enjoyed in our dedicated Pixel 8 Pro camera review.
During our overall review, we found that Google did a better job of tuning its new Tensor G3 processor to be more efficient and manage heat dissipation better. With that and the new Super Actua display tech, the Pixel 8 Pro can easily get through a day of use before you’ll need to charge it back up.
Unfortunately, Google is worse off than Samsung when it comes to its charging tech. The 30W wired charging is embarrassingly slow and will take you over an hour and a half to recharge your phone. Oddly enough, the wireless charging is actually somewhat impressive at 20W.
Best budget
While Samsung’s high-profile devices like the Galaxy S24 Ultra above tend to get the most attention, it’s the mid-range devices that end up in more user’s hands. The Samsung Galaxy A54 5G is at the top of that list thanks to its better-than-expected performance in relation to its fantastic price making it one of the best cheap phones you can buy.
In our review, we found that Samsung stepped up its game with its latest budget phone. The in-house Samsung Exynos 1380 processor does a great job of delivering good everyday power and giving users over a day’s worth of use between charges. In most budget devices, you usually sacrifice display and camera hardware. But with the Galaxy A54 5G, that isn’t the case.
Where there is a sacrifice is in the charging tech. Samsung left out wireless charging entirely and capped the wired option to only 25W. So, recharging the 5000mAh battery will take some time. But thankfully, the 120Hz variable refresh display helps to sip those mAh to give great battery life.
Best for performance
Though the RedMagic 9 Pro is categorized as one of the best gaming phones, it bucks the trend compared to most of its competition. That is, not only does it possess some of the most impressive performance you can get in a smartphone, but it also brings along some of the best camera chops in gaming phones. While it isn’t going to beat out the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or the Pixel 8 Pro, it is significantly better than other gaming phones, as found in our review of the RedMagic 9 Pro.
In addition to being a performance beast, when gaming, the dedicated shoulder triggers make the overall experience much more enjoyable. As does the stunning 120Hz display. But none of that matters if the phone can’t stay charged. Well, that’s not a worry here, as you can expect to easily get two days from the 6500mAh battery and recharge it in about 20 minutes thanks to the 80W wired charging. However, you’ll miss out on wireless charging.

Phones with amazing battery life are now the norm as Qualcomm and MediaTek deliver efficient chipsets that don’t consume too much battery. This is clearly evident with the Galaxy S24 Ultra; the phone has all the features you could ask for in a flagship, and the 5000mAh battery lasts well over a day, even with heavy use. Basically, it is one of the best Android phones available today.
If you’re looking for something cheaper, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2023) offers solid performance, a decent main camera, and excellent battery life. It even charges fairly quickly at 20W wired. If you work outdoors, you can listen to music all day with a 3.5mm headphone jack so you don’t have to worry about the battery on bluetooth headphones.
Of course, if you’re partial to Samsung, the Galaxy A54 continues to deliver in this area, giving you all the features on a budget.
