Spotify is one of the top music streaming services, offering free and paid access to more than 82 million songs online at last count. A paid plan adds several useful features, but maybe you don’t use it enough to justify the monthly cost. Perhaps you’ve switched to a rival service like Apple Music, or maybe you object to some of the content and personalities on Spotify and no longer care to give the company your business. Whatever the reason, here’s how to remove your ties to Spotify.
Our Top-Rated Music-Streaming Services
Cancel Spotify Premium
The paid Premium version adds in high-quality audio, unlimited skips, an ad-free experience, the option to play any tune in your collection, and a way to listen to music offline. If you opted for the Duo or Family plans, multiple people will have access to the same account.
In order to cancel a paid Spotify Premium account, sign into the service on the web via Spotify.com and click your name in the upper-right corner. Click Account > Available plans, then scroll down the page to the Spotify Free section. Click Cancel Premium.
By cancelling your membership, you are essentially downgrading to a free account. Spotify warns you what perks you will lose and when you will lose them. Click Cancel Premium.
Spotify will then ask you to complete a survey about why you cancelled your premium account and whether you’d be likely to subscribe again. Fill out the page if you wish and click Submit.
Close a Free Account
A free Spotify account limits you to shuffle play, so you have no control over the order in which your songs play. To remove a free Spotify account, head to the Spotify website and browse to Support > Account Settings > Closing Your Account > Close your account.
You will then be prompted to enter your Spotify login information if you’re not already logged in. Spotify will then ask if you are sure. Click the Close account button.
Spotify asks you to confirm that you are trying to delete the correct account. Review your username and email address at this time, then click Continue.
You are then told everything that will be removed from your associated account once the account is deleted. Check the box next to “I understand” and then click the Continue button.
You are then directed to check your email to complete the process. In the email from Spotify, click Close my account to finally shut it down. Spotify will send you a confirmation email with a link that can reactivate your account should you change your mind. The link is valid for seven days, after which time you won’t be able to bring your account back to life.
